WITH expectations high for a run at the championship Sheffield Steelers faltered on Saturday at home, losing 3-1 against an Edinburgh Capitals side who had six players flying into the country within 24 hours of the start of the match.
However, 24 hours normal service had been resumed with an outstanding 2-0 shut out of Cardiff with Joey Talbot scoring twice and Jody Lehman making several outstanding saves on the way to his shut out.

"We make life hard for ourselves at times" said Coach David Matsos. "I thought we were ready on Saturday but we came out flat. I have to take my share of the blame for that" he said.

Shock result of the night in Sheffield as the home side were turned over by a Capitals team who have barely met each other, with several players arriving in the last couple of days after the collapse of Zoom airlines last week hit the Scots travel plans.

Little doubt as to the star of the show however; skate forward emergency goaltender signing Pasi Raitanen, who stopped 50 of 51 shots to help the visitors to victory.

Capitals wasted little time before taking the initiative in this game as Taylor Christie shot them ahead at 5.35 and then on the powerplay player/coach Doug Christiansen made it 2-0 at 8.44. Despite heavy Steelers' pressure there was no further scoring in the period, with Steelers firing 18 shots on Raitanen to no avail.

It took until 52.26 until Steelers finally found the net with Jeff Legue scoring to end Raitanen's shutout hopes.

Sheffield bounced back well from their opening night home defeat against Edinburgh with this triumph in the Welsh capital. With Joey Talbot being the goal hero as he struck twice. The game took a turn for the worse with less than 30 seconds remaining as there were a total of 50 minutes in penalties handed out by referee Matt Thompson.

Despite a number of chances in the first period neither team could find a way through and the period ended goalless.

The visitors finally made the breakthrough at 33.02 as Joey Talbot netted on the power play. They held onto this lead until 40.27 when Talbot (2nd) netted his second of the game. Cardiff were unable to breach the net of Jody Lehman and he posted a 28 shots on goal shut out; this being the first blanking in the EIHL this season.
