Saturday brought an all important win at the House of Steel as Sheffield reduced the gap between themselves and current table toppers and defending champions Coventry Blaze with a 4-1 win.
Jeff Legue opened the scoring after 15 minutes before Ashl
ey Tait doubled the advantage seconds before the end of the first period. Blaze hit back strongly in the middle session but despite out-shooting their hosts 14-7, only a powerplay effort from Jonathan Weaver came as a reward.
With just a single goal gap in the final period, the game remained in the balance until late. But Sheffield claimed the spoils when Robert Dowd netted on the powerplay and Brad Cruikshank added a fourth in the dying seconds.
The win was made even more worthwhile 24 hours later when The Steelers completed a narrow win over Cardiff Devils after a shootout in the Welsh capital.
It was a case of history repeating itself for the umpteenth time as the match proved to be as feisty as ever with referee Michael Hicks dishing out 123 penalty minutes. Devil Doug MacIver and Steeler Cruikshank clashed after just two seconds while eight minutes in Andrew Sharp was thrown out after an altercation with Mike Hartwick.
Once things settled down Phil Hill fired the home side ahead but Steelers restored equality five minutes later with a counter from Joey Talbot on a delayed penalty call.
The second period was goalless but the home side wasted no fewer than four power play opportunities in the session. Into the third period and there seemed no way through for either side before Hill edged the home side ahead only for Dowd to tie it up again and send the game into overtime.
The overtime period failed to find a winner but a third player was ejected from the game with Jay Latulippe of Devils banished. Both sides scored in round four of the shootout but Legue managed to end the scoring with the Steelers' seventh effort and secured the win.
