Sheffield Steelers 4
Coventry Blaze 1

FOR the second time this season league leaders Coventry Blaze were sent home pointless in the top of the table clash with Sheffield Steelers.
Steelers now move to within four points of Blaze, but have two games in hand.

The home side claimed the honours thanks to late goals by Jeff Legue and Ashley Tait.

Blaze hit back strongly but despite out-shooting their host they had only a powe
r play effort by Jonathan Weaver to show for their efforts.

The game remained very much in the balance until late on but Steelers claimed the spoils when firstly Robert Dowd scored and then Brad Cruikshank added a fourth with 30 seconds of the game remaining to ensure the vital points remained in Sheffield.

Cardiff Devils 2
Sheffield Steelers 3 (after shootout)

On Sunday, Sheffield Steelers travelled to Wales and came away 3-2 victors over Cardiff Devils.

As is historically the case between these two teams this was a feisty affair with 123 penalty minutes handed out by referee Michael Hicks.

Cardiff were the first to find the net through Phil Hill, but Steelers' Joey Talbot soon restored the balance.

The second period was goalless but the home side wasted no fewer than four power play opportunities in the session. Into the third period and there seemed no way through for either side before Phil Hill edged the home side ahead only for Robert Dowd to tie it up again and send the game into overtime.

The shootout saw both teams score in round four (Jeff Legue of Steelers and Tyson Teplitsky of Devils) but finally Legue ended the contest when scoring with Steelers' seventh shot.

Steelers Head coach David Matsos said: "What a huge weekend, two very different performances but two outstanding character wins."
